How to calculate soffit
Panels = soffit area x 1.10 / panel area
Example: 160 ft of eave at 16 in deep is 160 x 1.33 = 213 sq ft. Vinyl panels cover 12 sq ft each, so order about 20 panels.
Soffit cost per linear foot (2026)
| Material | Installed per lin ft | 160 ft of eave |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | $8 to $15 | $1,280 to $2,400 |
| Aluminum | $12 to $22 | $1,920 to $3,520 |
| Wood | $15 to $30 | $2,400 to $4,800 |
| Add fascia wrap | $4 to $9 | $640 to $1,440 |

How much soffit should be vented?
Soffit vents are the intake half of attic ventilation. Most homes need about half the total net free area at the soffit. Size it with the attic ventilation calculator, then choose a mix of vented and solid panels.
When soffit needs replacing
- Peeling paint or soft spots on wood soffit.
- Birds, bees or squirrels getting into the attic.
- Water stains near the eaves, often from an ice dam or a failing gutter.
Soffit, fascia and gutters work as one system. Price gutters with the gutter calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure for soffit?
Measure the length of every eave and the depth from the wall to the back of the fascia. Multiply and add them up.
How much does soffit replacement cost?
Most homes pay $1,500 to $4,500 for vinyl or aluminum soffit, more with new fascia or rotted wood repair.
Should all soffit be vented?
Not always. Many installers alternate vented and solid panels or vent continuously. Match the intake to your attic's needs.
Is aluminum or vinyl soffit better?
Aluminum is more rigid and fire resistant. Vinyl costs less and will not dent. Both last decades.
